Prove esibite da diverse fondi indipendenti suggeriscono che le conseguenze negative del disastro della centrali nucleare Fukushima Daiichi sono di gran lunga maggiori di quelle inizialmente comprese e preventivate.  Una stima di 14.000 decessi registrati negli Stati Uniti sono direttamente legati al fallout radioattivo avvenuto in Giappone, secondo un rapporto pubblicato nel Dicembre 2011 sul International Jounal of Health Services.

Paradossalmente il network di monitoraggio radioattivo dell’Agenzia di Protezione Ambientale soffre di una scarsa manutenzione e di attrezzature non adeguate o vetuste.
